A native of Hong Kong SAR, China (born 1981), Werner Chan started his music training at the age of five by taking piano lessons. At the age of eleven, when the music teacher asked the pupils in his grade 7 class to compose music, Werner started to compose his first tune, “My Rondo in G Major”. Ever since then Werner continued to compose music. 
 
After completing matriculation, Werner took up the Diploma course at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, School of Music, where he studied music composition with Clarence Mak and Law Wing Fei. Among others he attended master class for music composition held by
Krostoff Pendereski and Chen Yi. His graduation work “Exody” , a trio for clarinet, oboe and bassoon, was performed at the graduation concert at HKAPA in July 2001. 
 
In Fall 2001, Werner continued his studies at the Conservatory of Music, University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) with Professor Dr. James Mobberley, Professor Zhou Long and Professor Chen Yi. His sophomore semester work, “Brave New World” was performed by the Kendle String Quartet in Kansas City in December 2001. 
 
Werner received his degree Bachelor of Music, Music Composition in May 2004. A graduation recital of Werner’s works was performed and live recorded at UMKC. Werner conducted his concerto for cello and percussion ensemble. 
 
Werner continued to study at the Conservatory of UMKC towards the degree of Master of Music and graduated in May 2007. His Master thesis “Far Cry”, a concerto for trombone and large ensemble, was presented during the master class conducted by Steven Stucky. The live recording of the work, conducted by Werner personally, was recorded in 2006. His latest composition work, Battle of Chi Bi, Borrowed Arrows, is an orchestral overture.
 
Werner graduated in May 2007, holding the degree MMus. Music Composition. He is currently working with Theodor Presser, a Philadelphia based music publisher specialized in classical and contemporary music publishing. 
 
Scholarships 
 
During his undergraduate studies, Werner was the recipient of the Ovation Award for piano from the Conservatory. 
Werner was a recipient of the UMKC Chancellor’s Non-resident Award through out his undergrad and graduate studies. 
 
Award 
 
String Quartet “Brave New World” was submitted to the UM Campuses Music Composition Contest 2003, sponsored by the James and Vera Olson Fund for the Arts, and won the award “honorable mentioned”.

Orchestral Overture

陈天玮,1981年在香港出生,5岁开始接受音乐训练,学习钢琴弹奏。11岁时,在中一音乐课尝试作曲,第一首作品为我的G大调园舞曲 从此开始尝试创作音乐。

中七毕业后,进入香港演艺学院音乐学院作曲系修读文凭班,随麦伟铸,罗永晖学习。其中在大师班曾经向Krostoff Pendereski及陈怡学习。其毕业作品“Exody", 单簧管,双簧管及巴松管三重奏,由旅德作曲家陈晓勇评分,并于20017月在学院毕业演奏会演出。

2001年秋,获大学 Chancellor's Non-resident Award及音乐学院 Ovation Award”钢琴奖学金,入读美国米苏里堪萨斯州立大学音乐学院作曲系,随陈怡及周龙博士学习。其入学首个作品弦乐四重奏勇敢新世界,于200112月由Kendle室乐组演出.该作品获得由美国詹姆斯和菲拉·奥森艺术基金会赞助的T'ang Quartet & UMKC 2003-2004室内乐作曲比赛荣誉奖. 陈天玮现已完成硕士学位,主修作曲。其硕士论文“呐喊”,为长号与大型组乐协奏曲,由大师Steven Stucky评听。最近完成的大型作品,有管弦乐序曲“赤壁之战”之“孔明借箭”。

陈天玮已于今年五月硕士毕业。他将会在美国宾夕尼亚州费城一家音乐出版社工作,协助推广古典及现代艺术音乐
