Afterglow

[
Written by Alex Miller on 12-11-04

This song is pretty intense, and though it deals with some real issues, I think it's very joyful over all. What I love about it is the way that is joins beauty and intensity, which is something you'll have to hear before you can understand. That's the way the heart is sometimes, though, especially when it is released from a burden, which is ultimately what this song is about - it's about the way that God can use someone in your life to heal old wounds and bring about new hope, even when you feel utterly alone.
Verse 1
The sun had started to come out
The stars were moving through the clouds
In the wake of all that I had lost
You took away the urge to count the cost
Chorus
Standing on the edge
Of all I thought I ever wanted
I will find you waiting
Dying in your arms,
I find the afterglow that formed
Will start to fade
Fought to keep the love
And in the battle lost my heart
But you would save me
Dying in your arms,
I find the afterglow that formed
Will fade away
Verse 2
A breath and the light in me was gone
Left alone to face the crimson dawn
You drifted down into me, just a spark
Was heat enough to burn away the dark
Chorus
Final Chorus
Scream into the sky
I ask the questions, seek a sight
That won't betray me
Dying in your arms,
I find the afterglow that formed
Will start to fade
Break my heart in two
I see the One who's using you
To shine into me
Dying in your arms,
I find the afterglow that formed
Will fade away |

It's been a while...but I did write a new song! It took forever, but it's finally here and hopefully worth the wait. It's something between Bridges & Backroads and The Fall...I'd call it "catchy piano driven punk alt rock Something Corporate Jimmy Eat World"...ish. (Lyrics modified 1-5-05) (and again 1-22-05) (and yet again 2-2-05)
Verse 1
Goodnight my dear
I'll hold your hand
Til you fall asleep
I'll be right here
Til you wake up
Cause you know that I can't leave
Pre-Chorus 1
You know that I won't leave you
Even though I know that I can't stay
Maybe I'm starting to believe you
Or maybe I've just lost the will to run away
Chorus
I'm holding your picture
In the palm of my hand
But still it's that look
In your eyes I can't stand
Cause it's asking where I'm going
And it's asking me to stay
And I might be gone tomorrow
But don't worry
Cause I'm here today
Verse 2
We stopped outside
And parted softly
With a quick embrace
And as you smiled
I longed to hold you
Join the stars that kissed your face
Pre-Chorus 2
You know that I won't leave you
Even though I know that I can't stay
Just hold this moment while I need you
And maybe time can let us linger, just today |

Look In The Mirror

This is one of the new songs we've come out with since we recorded the album, so if you want to hear it, you'll have to ask us to play it for you! The first verse actually alludes to the fact that the events we talk about in the album (which is going to be called "This Lonely City") are over. Cool, huh? Anyway, it's about living in the wake of a broken heart - how the sadness of loneliness can take it's tool on how you live your life day to day. I know it's kinda sad, but that's sort of what the song's about - life isn't always full of happy endings, and embracing that truth can help us to move on.
Verse 1
Broken hearts and shattered crowns
Have done their part to bring you down
You've walked so far since the stars went out
And the lights dark on that lonely town
Chorus
So who am I supposed to be
Now I'm out here on my own?
He seems so far apart from me
Now you left me all alone
And the wings that carried me so high
Have broken in the wind
And staring at him, eye to eye,
I see only where I've been
Verse 2
Well the carpet red
That they spread out so wide
Lead back to where you'd been
To what You'd already tried
Just when You spread your wings
They force you back in the mold
Chasing the higher things,
You fell back into the old
Chorus
So who am I supposed to be
Now I'm out here on my own?
He seems so far apart from me
Now you left me all alone
And the wings that carried me so high
Have broken in the wind
And staring at him, eye to eye,
I see only where I've been
Post Chorus
When I look in the mirror I see
Only a shadow of what I wanted to be |

The Only Chance That Ever Comes

I think all the rest of the guys (as well as anyone else who gets the chance to hear this song) will agree with me when I say that this song marks the beginning of something new for us as a group. I don't think we've ever achieved this kind of drive, mix, quality, or complexity before. We hope you'll be as excited to hear this track as we are to get it out to you.
Recording to come soon...
Verse 1
I’ve never seen an innocence like yours
So free and yet so torn
That part of me is worn
I never stood out on the edge before
I’m counting all the lights
Touch everything in sight
I never asked the dead to open doors
It comes across your face
Electric in this place
I never swam the sea beyond the shore
You’re stylish to pretend
No feeling in the end
Chorus
When you’re moving at the speed of light
To the coming of the night
And you get there (x2)
When you crash it just to feel it break
Take the damage for excitement’s sake
And you get there (x2)
Verse 2
The soft and gentle wonder of this place
Is back behind your eyes
It’s moving in your mind
Embrace the only possible disgrace
To not be all you are
And hide behind your scars
Bridge
Oh, you know our race is better off in twos
Not better off alone
It’s hardly ever done
Oh, I never found a match for what we’ll be
So just hang up the phone
This might be the only chance that ever comes
Chorus

1. Bridges and Backroads

If you've heard any of our stuff, you've probably heard this one. It is the signature catchy song--lol. It was one of the first songs I wrote for the band and my first successful attempt at piano rock...it turned out pretty good!
Verse 1
I'm driving away from this lonely city;
The truth is, I never thought I'd dare.
Destination unknown, I climb past sixty;
Just wanting to find somewhere.
Verse 2
And backroads and bridges are all that I'm taking;
The highway is fading away.
I'm hoping that maybe there's someone waiting
To find me...
Chorus
Now I'm gone,
Moving on,
Will my heart let me?
Please don't forget me.
I don't know
Where to go,
But my compass is an hourglass,
And life goes so fast.
Verse 3
I'm travelling over a river of pain,
And once again I end up on bad memory lane.
I tried to dodge them, but they still remain
To find me...
Bridge
And one of these days I'll find my place,
I don't know when or where I'll be,
But time will lead me straight to me. |

2. Can't Complain

Written by Alex Miller on 2-1-04

I was just messing around one afternoon and this song just fell into my mind. It's about being hopelessly in love: even though she ignores you, you can't complain, you're head over heels for her!
Verse 1
I stand at the restaurant at eight
This didn’t go as we planned it
I’m stuck with this once well–intended bouquet
Now I’m being upended
Chorus
And I can’t complain
When you wander by, take away my pain
But you’ve left me here again
Left to wonder why you just couldn’t stay
Again
Verse 2
I should have known better than to sit and wait
You just can’t seem to make it
Don’t you know that I’d follow that smile ‘till I break
Why are you’re so slow to give it
Bridge
And did you fake that smile
So I’d never know
That you wanted to stay awhile
Please don’t let me let you go!
Final Chorus
And I can’t contain
What my heart would feel if you’d come my way
Please don’t leave me here again
In this lonely place, where I can’t complain
Again |

3. Somehow

This is the first song I ever wrote that I was really satisfied with. It's about loving unconditionally, even when someone hurts you.
Verse 1
I’ve got a story I need to tell
I can’t escape it
But if I’m silent, it’s just as well
'Cause there’s no one to hear it
Pre-Chorus
Did you expect me to forget you?
Do you remember me, too?
Chorus
I’m making a break, I’m chasing the day
This night’s been so long, but it gave us our song
I’m making a break, I’m chasing the day
Our stars can’t be seen now, but they’ll still shine Somehow
Verse 2
I knew so well the taste of your grace
The light of your face, it melted
Me like the winter’s frozen ice
In the morning sunlight
Bridge
I stand here wondering if you forgot me
While you walked in the stars
I’m haunted by your memory
By who you are
Final Chorus
I’m making a break, I’m chasing the day
This night’s been so long, but it gave us our song
I’m making a break, I’m chasing the day
You’re so long gone now, but I feel you,
Somehow |

4. One Request

I've been working on this song for a while, and it's finally to a point that I'm satisfied with it. It's dominated by piano kinda like Bridges and Backroads.
Verse 1
Again he sits beside his open bedroom window
He feels the coldness of the air
As he looks, another star falls from heaven
And he whispers this one prayer
Pre-Chorus
I don't have much to ask
Cause I don't have much to give
But I've got one request
Chorus
Let me know why I'm here
Let me know that someone cares
Let my life be more than this
Give me feeling inside
A reason to be alive
This is my one request
Verse 2
As the night falls down around him
He lies in bed but he won't sleep
The empty dreams he holds inside him
Escape to roll down off his cheek
Bridge
He locks all the doors
Can you break in
To a life in the dark
And try to mend
What was broken and lost
Could you make me again
Final Chorus
Let me know why I'm here
Let me know that someone cares
Let my life be more like His
Give me feeling inside
A reason to be alive
This is my one request |

5. Broken

Written by Alex Miller on 2-8-04

I love this song! It's about waking up one day and realizing the world is broken, trying to do something about it, and realizing that you can't do it alone: you need God!
Verse 1
It's gone
This foolish masquerade,
This childish mask
What's wrong?
It's me I once obeyed
Can't help but ask
Pre-Chorus 1
How I was so blind before
But You've opened the door
Chorus
This world is broken,
Can I touch it?
It's bleeding,
Can I save it?
When the sky falls,
Will you hold me?
With you here I can make it
Verse 2
Can't wait
Can't drift on back to sleep
I've seen these stars
Whose lights
The city couldn't see
It's drifted far
Pre-Chorus 2
This broken, lamp-lighted town
Dirty air where it's drowning |

6. Bread and Wine

[
Written by Alex Miller on 9-7-04
]
This song is my own attempt to put to music the way that the truth of what Christ did for me has changed my whole life - even when I struggle to forget Him completely, His voice is ever calling me home!
Verse 1
I'd like to think You could call me Your friend
But the words I speak make me think again
Cowering in the dark, I hide who I am
Faced with who You are, with what I can't comprehend
Chorus
And I can't seem to let You
Out the door of my mind
No I cannot forget You
No matter how hard I try
Because You mean something to me
Something that words can't define
So would You keep talking to me
About the Bread and Wine?
Verse 2
You know I never knew I could feel like this
As I encounter You, I become someone else
Someone my tainted heart longs to reject
But in my deepest part, someone I deeply respect
Chorus
And I can't seem to let You
Out the door of my mind
No I cannot forget You
No matter how hard I try
Because You mean something to me
Something that words can't define
So would You keep talking to me
About the Bread and Wine?
Bridge
Well, this darkness inside
Says I can use my heart as a guide
But if there's one thing I've learned
In all this lonely time,
It's that this bitter love's
Got nothing on Your wine
Chorus |

7. The Fall

[
Written by Andrew Richardson on 7-6-04

OK this entire song came to me during work (both guitar parts and all the lyrics just kinda popped into my head)...it was strange. But I wrote it all down and worked it out when I got home, and it turned out to be pretty cool! It's more upbeat than my other stuff--and I'm glad for the variety.
Verse 1
Look at me, look at you
Do we know what we're trying to do?
Do we know what we're trying to be?
Playing games, the runaround
Of a hesitant uncertainty
Casualty of chemistry
Chorus
Are we just too scared?
We could lose it all
But if you hold your breath and take the fall
Then I'll be there to catch you
Verse 2
Sitting side by side alone
The world ignored becomes a dream
And for a moment we are real
But suddenly, reality
Returns to me, and now I see
What seems to be impossibility
Final Chorus
Why are we so scared?
We could have it all
So hold your breath and take the fall
You know I'll never let you fall |

8. The Last Call
|

[
Written by Alex Miller on 7-16-04
]
The Last Call is a song of closure - it's a song to the Lord about letting Him all the way back in my heart. I do have questions, and I do have pain, but He is Lord over all.
Verse 1
Enduring the rising dawn
Can't hold on much longer
Releasing the setting sun
Long for the days when I was younger
Pre-Chorus
I can feel You here
You can tear me asunder
Chorus
This is the last call
I'll let you in after all
Verse 2
The ocean - a pane of glass
These questions asked echoed empty
Devotion - my final taks
You showed the way; more than a memory
Pre-Chorus
And You gave me this choice
I here Your voice, and I will answer
Chorus
Thie is the last call
I'll let you in after all |

9. Taking Toll

[
Written by Alex Miller on 6-22-04

This song means so much to me. While I was at the beach early this summer, I spent a lot of time walking along the shore looking up at the stars. I had a ton on my mind at the time, and as I wrote this song, I tried to make it sound and feel just like it did to stand on that beach. It's about struggling with memories so good that you don't want to let go, so good that when you have to leave them behind, they take a part of you with them.
Verse 1
Wrote your name in the starlight tonight
Swallowed these questions in my head tonight
Neck-deep in memories, like an ocean I swim
Can't keep these feelings from surfacing again
Chorus
Being without you is taking its toll
These memories of you are taking their hold
Verse 2
Can this be over - what never started tonight?
You're getting closer - we never parted tonight
Was it contageous, was I dragging you down?
Was it dangerous to keep me hanging around?
Chorus
Being without you is taking its toll
These memories of you are taking their hold
Being without you is taking its toll
These memories of you are taking control
Bridge
And though I stand on this distant shore
I feel you more here than ever before
Leave this lonely city behind
And keep your shadowed reflection inside
Chorus |
