Mary Jane Tashiro

After my daughter and son were born, my concern was to give them a love for the piano that I had. I taught from many books choosing the songs that would appeal to them. Composing for them did not occur to me until in 1974, I had begun studying the Equal Interval System by Spud Murphy. After publishing the first and second books called MAGICAL MOVING MOMENTS, Jon Sivell, English pianist premiered my music in Switzerland (1981) with wonderful reviews. With this, I was spurred on to continue to compose more music.
After my 1st grandson was born, I began to compose children’s songs for him. In 1986 when I moved to New York, I began to teach a group of children that resisted learning to play piano. To stimulate them, I added more songs to the ones that I had started composing for my grandson; thus, completing a Children’s Piano Course of over 300 piano solos. From 1988 until 2000 I was in charge of a young people’s all girl choir which inspired me to compose 2 books of 3 part harmony. Later I became associated with an adult choir in Japan which led to adding a 3rd book of songs.
From 2003 until 2006, I was fortunate to have the time to get back to composing advanced piano music. 2 books became a special expression of my life experiences and emotion, a natural way of expression for many composers through their own music.
An honor for a composer is to be commissioned to compose something specific. This came in 2007, when I was requested to compose a Trio for Clarinet/Violin/Piano. With the success of this, in 2008 I was commissioned to compose a composition for 6 hands at one piano. This crowd pleaser led to another request in 2009 to compose an alto saxophone/vibraphone composition.
Because students as well as my own family are now performing and enjoying my music, I feel the many hours spent to create this music from 1979 to 2009, has been worth every moment, making me feel the happiness that comes from giving this same love I have for music to others.
