Sam
Bell Maxey Long
|
Sam
Bell Maxey Long was born August 14, 1869 and was raised by the Maxey's
after his father, William H.H. Long, drowned while on a business trip
to Clarksville, Texas in 1871. After Sam Bell Maxey was elected to the
U.S. Senate in 1874, Sam Long travelled with him to Washington D.C where
he attended Mrs. Jensen's School. Later, while living in Washington, Sam
served as a page in the Senate. Sam Long entered the University of Texas
in 1887, completed his undergraduate degree in 1891, and later graduated
from U.T. Law School. In 1892 he joined the Maxey, Lightfoot, and Denton
law firm. On December 12, 1894 Sam married Lala Williams, the daughter
James Shelby and Alice Williams. After their marriage, the couple moved
into two of the upstairs rooms of the Maxey house. Sam lived in the Maxey
home and maintained an active law practice until his death on November
9, 1948.
