Marilda
Cass Denton Maxey
|
Marilda
Cassa Denton was born December 20, 1833 in Albany, Clinton county Kentucky.
The untutored daughter of George Nolan Denton, a poor Kentucky farmer,
Marilda married Samuel Bell Maxey on June 19, 1853. Marilda and Sam moved
to Paris, Texas in October 1857. After the home was built in 1868, Marilda
began the task of furnishing her new home. During her husband's time in
the Senate, Marilda would often make it a point to stop in St. Louis to
buy furniture while on the way to Washington D.C. Marilda did seem to
have a taste for fine things as evidenced by her European made china and
silver which is still on display in the Maxey dining room. While Marilda
and Sam had no natural children, Mrs. Maxey helped raise both Dora Rowell
Maxey, her adopted daughter, and Sam Bell Maxey Long, her great nephew.
Marilda lived in the house built by her husband until her death in 1908.
Marida Cassa Denton Maxey is buried next to her husband in Evergreen cemetery
in Paris, Texas.
