Lala
Williams Long |
Lala
Williams, the daughter of James Shelby and Alice Williams, was born October
25, 1873. In 1888, at age 15, Lala was sent to finishing school at Gardiner's
School on Fifth Avenue in New York City. She remained there for four years
until she left school three weeks early in 1891 so that she could join
her parents on a tour of Europe. On December 12, 1894 she married Sam
Bell Maxey Long, a partner in the Maxey, Lightfoot, and Denton law firm
in Paris, Texas. The couple moved into the Maxey home after their wedding
and lived there until their deaths. After the death of Marilda Maxey in
1908, Sam and Lala Long took on the task of remodeling and modernizing
the house in 1911. Lala was very proud of her community and did a great
deal of work to help rebuild Paris after the fire of 1916. Mrs. Long recieved
a silver cup for her outstanding contributions to the Civic betterment
of Paris and became the champion of Civic beautification through the old
"Civic League." Lala Long died in Paris in 1965.
