"Friends of the Maxey House"
The Friends are all volunteers who appreciate the historical value of
Maxey House and actively support it in a number of ways. Every person
who pays annual membership dues is automatically a Friend. Volunteers
serve as docents who give tours of the home and tell visitors of the Maxey
family and their involvement in local, state and national affairs. A group
of volunteers will be present to inform school children on field trips,
serve during various open house times during the year. Get a mental picture
of a three-legged stool; let the seat be Maxey House. One "leg"
that supports it in the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department; they actually
own the home now. The Lamar Country Chamber of Commerce and the Friends
group are the other two "legs." The officers and board members
of the Friends can seek funding from foundations whereas state entities
are not allowed to do that. In recent years the board has secured funds
for installing climate control to the house, a water sprinkler system
for the yard, lighting for grounds at night, the house has been leveled,
painted and other repairs and improvements. You can become a member of
the Friends on a dues level that suits your situation. Consider joining
us for the more Friends we have the better we like it.
