Dora
Rowell Maxey
|
Dora Rowell was born November 3, 1856.
After the death of her mother she was raised by her maternal grandmother
and step-grandfather in Blossom, Texas. After the deaths of her grandparents
in 1863, Dora was adopted by Sam Bell and Marilda Maxey of Paris, Texas.
Dora lived with the Maxeys until being sent to the Caldwell Institute
in Kentucky. After visiting home in 1874 she refused to return to the
Institute. Instead of re-entering school, Dora married Maxey's law partner,
Henry William Lightfoot, on her 18th birthday November 3, 1874. In 1876
Dora and Henry built their home just north of the Maxey's where it still
stands today. In October 1883 Dora was diagnosed with stomach cancer and
later died on July 13, 1884.
