Installing brp hubcaps

parts used

In this example, I'm using the Wizzard .370B LAW silicone sponge racing tires. The .380 Wizzard tires can be used, or any of JB's ThunderRubber silicone sponge tires. Brp hubcaps fit either the ThunderRubber or Wizzard LAW Tjet sized hubs. We are also using a .059 Lifelike axle or the same size Tyco axle. This is to make it easier to put on the hubs. For the actual axle in the FRAY/VHORS racing Tjet, we are using the .062 Tomy Super G axle. I prefer the Super G for its finish and straightness. You could also use the Aurora truck/hot rod axle, or the TuffOne/AFX axle. Basically any .062 axle will work, as long as it is as long as the afore mentioned axles. BSRT makes a nice Titanium .062 axle, unfortunately it is too short to fit brp hubcaps.

press tires on Lifelike axle

To effectively mount silicone sponge racing tires and wheels, you do need a quality tire press and puller in your race kit. In this example, we are using the Lucky Bob puller and press, available through Wizzard. The first step is to press the new tires on to a .059 Tyco or Lifelike axle. This should be done carefully to ensure the tire goes on straight! Go ahead and do this to both tires. This will make it easier to put them on the .062 axle. Go ahead and use the puller to take the tires off of the Lifelike axle.

Press on the first wheel

With the Super G axle installed in the Tjet, through the crown gear, press the tire on to the axle...again keeping it straight. You will find this is easier, now that the tire has already been mounted on a .059 axle.

Press on the second wheel

Now press on the second tire, keep it straight. Use a tech block to check the width, to make sure you are not wider than an inch and five sixteenths!

Press hubcap on .059 axle

Next take a hubcap and press a .059 axle into the finished side. Place this assembly into the hole of the Lucky Bob press. The unfinished side of the hubcap is now ready to be pressed onto the tire/wheel assembly.

Press on hubcap

Use the press to put the hubcap securely on the axle, inside the wheel. Make sure not to squeeze the wheel closer to the chassis. If you do this, just use the puller to bring the wheel out to the legal maximum. New hubcaps will press on a new .062 axle and stay securely without gluing. If the hubcap has been pressed on and pulled off a time or two, then glue would need to be used, to ensure the hubcap doesn't fall off in a race!

Switch the puller and press's screw

Take the pin out of the Lucky Bob puller, and remove the screw from the press. Insert the puller's pin screw into the press.

putting on second hubcap

Fix the other hubcap, as before on a .059 axle in the press. Since we have the pin screw in the press we can tighten the assembly by pressing the axle into the other hubcap. By doing things this way the wheels stay in the correct position and only the hubcap is pressed into the wheel.

Recommended glues

This is the completed Tjet with hubcaps fully inserted into the wheels. They should not protrude from the wheels face. If you have problems with the hubcap staying on the axle, use your choice of Super Glue, Locktite 242 or Locktite 380 "Black Max" ...put a drop on the end of the axle and press the hubcap on. Normally this is not necessary, unless you are using a chamfered or .059 axle in your Tjet. Also if you have pressed and removed the hubcaps previously, it would be a good idea to use a drop of glue on the end of the axle. Don't worry, a puller will easily remove the wheel and hubcap, even if it is glued on.
