Statue to be erected on Loggans Roundabout

In recognition for his long service as a town and district councillor for and his unstinting devotion to the people of Hayle plans have been announced to erect a statue of Owen Philp on the Loggans roundabout at the entrance to Hayle.

Local artist and sculptor Flora Lopi has been commissioned to produce the greater than life-size figure to be cast in bronze and mounted on a granite plinth which will take pride of place in the centre of the roundabout dubbed ‘The Gateway to Penwith’.

Flora said that she was delighted to have been selected to produce what she considered to be the most important piece of public art ever to be commissioned in Penwith and was able to confirm that the funding for the art-work had been secured.

It is thought that obtaining final planning consent will be a formality after the Highways Agency withdrew its objection to the scheme. The Agency had initially raised concerns that the placement of the figure on the roundabout could distract motorists and disrupt traffic flow as drivers slowed down to admire the erection. However these concerns were withdrawn after local consultations suggested that this was very unlikely
