Hawkins Protest Planned

Hayle Residents Association is set to hold a demonstration before Penwith planners decide the fate of a the planning application to build a three story block of flats on the site.

Despite rumours that the plan to develop the former Hawkins Garage site had been withdrawn it has emerged that the developer still seems to be pressing ahead with the proposal despite the fact that local residents condemned the proposal in a recent referendum by a massive 10:1 majority.

It seems that despite protestations by Penwith Chair of Planning, and Hayle Town Councillor, Owen Philp that the ‘referendum was a waste of time’, Hayle town council at least is taking a more cautious approach to the development proposal and has called for Penwith Council to look at all the options when it comes to considering the future of a prominent waterfront site in the town.

Councillor John Bennett explained that Hayle Town council was in general agreement with the parish poll and that there is some dissatisfaction with the current proposals and ex-mayor Brian Capper called for the site to be brought into public ownership to secure its future use as an amenity for Hayle.

Meanwhile Owen Philp warned that the time-frame for the planning application was rapidly drawing near and that the applicant may then go to appeal on grounds of non-determination. He also claimed that the current application ticked all the right boxes under government housing development guidelines and he could see no reason for it not going ahead.

The application is due to be formally considered by Penwith planners on November 29 at John's Hall in
Penzance. At 6:30. Hayle residents association is set to hold a demonstration outside the planning meeting to press the case for the refusal of the plan. The Association is asking that as many people as possible turn up at St Johns Hall to lobby the planners and to ensure that the strength of the objection is seriously considered.
