Hayle Referendum Result

Hayle's first ever Parish poll, or referendum has shown that the people back the purchase of the old Hawkins garage as an amenity area by a massive 10:1 majority.

The result of the poll is shown below.

'Should Hawkins Motors site on Hayle Terrace be brought into public ownership for use as an amenity area in perpetuity?' Yes

972

No

97

Turnout was 16.5% - not bad considering that no poling cards were issued and that there was a lot of confusion over where to vote caused by boundary changes of which many voters were unaware and is a respectable figure when compared to some local by-elections.

While the result of the poll is 'non-binding' the fact that more people voted for the proposal than voted in recent elections in support of any single town or parish councillor adds great weight to democratic argument that the voice of the people should be respected.

The counter argument  which some people have already started to make in order to defend their increasingly vulnerable stance is that only just over a thousand people voted so the majority of the people of Hayle must be happy with the current proposals. This defies all logic however.

It must be remembered that while 972 people voted to bring the Hawkins site into public ownership and use as an amenity area the most votes any single Hayle district councillor could muster was 756. So if this twisted logic is o be followed them all councillors should all resign as clearly the majority of Hayle people want someone else to represent them.

Penwith Council planning committee is due to meet later this month to consider the current planning application.
