Here we go again - Referendum Mk2

Following the controversial decision by Penwith Council to refuse the original request by the people of Hayle for a local referendum on the future of the old Hawkins Motors site in Hayle, another public meeting has been called.

The decision by Penwith District Council to raise objections to the referendum question put forward at the original meeting on the grounds that it actually asked Penwith to do something and because council officers thought the question was 'a leading question' seems dubious in the extreme given the wide range of questions which have been accepted for a local referendum in other places. Some examples of questions which have successfully been put to a local Parish/Town referendum are listed opposite.

While it would in theory be possible to challenge Penwiths decision it was felt that this would only be playing into their hands and would result in the referendum being delayed even further. It has been decided therefore with some reluctance that the best course of action is  to hold another public meeting at which the issue of a public referendum on the future of the Old Hawkins site will be fully discussed again.

The new meeting is scheduled to take place at the same venue as the previous meeting ie. on the top floor of the

Passmore Edwards Institute
in
Commercial Road, Hayle
The date has been set for
Wednesday September 14th
and will start at
7:30pm

The official notice of the meeting as required by law and signed by at least six persons on the electoral register will be posted shortly.

Please make every effort to attend.

STOP PRESS:
It has recently been announced that the planning meeting at which the Hawkins Garage development proposal will be decided has been deferred until October 4th so there is no reason why the referendum cannot take place prior to a decision being made!

STOP STOP PRESS:
Penwith have reneged on their press statement to 'do all they can to assist in the referendum' and have now announced that they will not send a representative to the public meeting as promised.
