Godrevy Light Saved

Hayle Eye can reveal that public pressure and common sense has prevailed and Trinity House have now announced that Godrevy Light will continue to shine out over St Ives Bay.

Following representations and objections it was decided that discontinuing Godrevy Lighthouse would not be in the best interests of protecting the safety of mariners.  Trinity House said  that it appreciated the importance of Godrevy lighthouse marking St Ives Bay as a place of shelter, the only one on the north Cornish coast, in storms from the prevailing south-westerly direction.

It was also noted that significant numbers of small fishing vessels and leisure craft with minimal onboard navigation aids were active in the area and have a high level of local reliance on this light. As a result Trinity house have announced that they do not intend to proceed with the proposal to discontinue the Godrevy Light or the Stones buoy.

A Trinity House Spokesperson said "Clearly Godrevy Lighthouse still fulfils a vital role and we have now been able to conclude that the lighthouse is the most effective means of navigation for the area  and are therefore able to justify its operational future.”

However, it has been decided to reduce the range of the light from the current 12 miles down to 10 miles as  part of the general maintenance and engineering programme.
