Referendum to be called |

More than 100 people crammed into Passmore Edwards Institute on Tuesday and voted to call for a public referendum on the future of the former Hawkins Motors site at Hayle. Currently plans are on the table to build a three story high block festooned with wood cladding and a sheet metal roof in the heart of the Hayle Conservation Area. An artists impression of the finished building is shown below.
The meeting was unanimous in voting for a referendum calling for the proposed housing development to be rethought and the site purchased as an open space for community use.
It was decided that the referendum would be most effective if restricted to the single issue of the the Hawkins Motors Site and the papers formally calling on Penwith District Council to hold Referendum will be presented shortly.
Feelings on the issue of Loggans Mill were also running high with many people expressing their great concerns about the state of this important historical listed structure and in-particular how Penwith Council had now allowed housing almost up to the walls while none of the £300,000 secured as part of the Lidl supermarket development deal has been spent renovating the building.
While it was decided not to pursue a referendum on the Loggans Mill issue at the moment for fear of clouding the more immediate Hawkins Motors Site issue, the door was left open for a another referendum if an improvement in the current situation was forthcoming. The meeting passed a resolution calling upon Penwith Council to take immediate steps towards the repair of the building with a view to making it available for community use. In the meantime it was decided to set up a petition calling for the restoration of the Mill for community use
