Congratulations are in order for new neighbourhood police
constable Simon Mars for it is through his individual efforts
that the community in Tolview and Tremeadow Terrace in
Hayle has been united in a common cause. The only problem is
that the community are now united against him.
Apparently problems first arose when a member of the public
parked behind Tolview Terrace and was told that parking was for
residents and would she please mind parking elsewhere in future.
It is
believed that a complaint was made to PC Mars, who took it upon
himself to intervene. On visiting the scene PC Mars is said to
have rejected protestations from residents that the area was
designated as residents parking. At least one resident was very
upset by PC Mars' approach which was reportedly
dismissive to
the point of rudeness.
Residents
were subsequently sent a letter from Devon and Cornwall
Constabulary informing them that PC Mars had checked with the
council and again stated that the area was NOT for the sole use
of residents and that anyone could park in the spaces on a first
come first served basis. Apparently at least one local business
was also informed that it was in order for customers to park in
the free space rather than use the 'Pay and Display' car park
100m away in Foundry Square.
Upset
residents subsequently contacted councillor Mike Mathews and
council officer Rod Porter who confirmed that the area in
question was indeed for 'Residents Only' as the residents had claimed all
along. Apparently the signs which once proclaimed the
residents parking status of the area were removed when the
lamp-posts were replaced and never returned which may in part
have led to the confusion. Residents have also written to MP
Andrew George who expressed his support for the residents, Mr
George is well versed with the area having lived there himself
for a number of years prior to becoming MP.
PC Mars
has subsequently written again to the residents informing them
that he has now been told that the area is for residents parking
only but some residents are still far from happy as the letter
did not offer the apology which they had been seeking.
A letter has been sent to the Chief Constable of Devon and
Cornwall Police outlining the situation and asking that in
addition to an apology, PC Mars should also reappraise local
businesses of the 'Residents Only' status of the parking
area . They have also called for the 'Residents Only' signs be
replaced. No reply has been received so far.
Regret was
expressed by residents that one of PC Mars' first actions as
neighbourhood beat manager was to
alienate so
many people in the local community within such a short time.
Thanks were expressed to
Andrew George
MP and Hayle
Town Council - in particular
Cllr Mike Mathews, for their support.
