Kneehigh Theatre Hayle Extravaganza

The Kneehigh Theatre will be performing their internationally acclaimed large-scale, open-air, site-specific production of  'A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings' on Hayle Harbour this summer. The event which runs each evening from 26th July to 7th August is part of the Kneehigh 25th anniversary celebrations.

Hayle offers a very apt backdrop for the event which is based on the original story by Columbian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez which is considered to be an archetype of Magical Realism where the familiar real world meets the unexplained.

The story revolves around a man with enormous wings who crash-lands into a small poor town. The event attracts great attention from the wider world and nothing is ever the same again. The story however, is not so much about the Very Old Man with Enormous Wings but about the people that he comes into contact with. The rather dark plot depicts flaws in human nature and explores how suspicion, ignorance, prejudice, and lack of compassion and understanding can lead to a cruel, hostile, inward looking society unable to appreciate beauty in its midst. Of course then story is given the characteristic action packed and spectacular Kneehigh treatment which we have come to expect making full use of the site at Hayle. A man will fly!

Even the interval is something of an event in itself. A carnival atmosphere involving sideshows, stunts, shadow plays, live music, a crafts fair, and quality food and drink vendors from three countries.

Early booking is advised at the demand is expected to be very high and believe me it’s something you would not want to miss. The event is a promenade production; limited seating is available for the elderly and disabled if booked in advance. The production is suitable for all ages.

The site opens to the public at 6:30 to allow you to enjoy the craft and food market and to enjoy your picnic. The performances begin at 8:00 and will finish at around 10:30. Delicious locally sourced ‘Cornish Produce’ picnic boxes can also be pre-ordered Adults £9 Children £6.

Tickets are available now from the Hall for Cornwall Box Office on 01872 262466. Adults £12 Children £7 Concessions £8.
