St Erth has been identified as the most suitable
site in West Cornwall to develop a Park and Ride Scheme in a study
produced for Penwith Council.
Councillors
were told by chief executive Jim McKenna
and Roger Harnett, the head of planning and building control, that the
site near St Erth station, recently vacated by a scrap metal business, had the potential to provide enhanced park and
ride facilities not only for St Ives but also Hayle, and Penzance.
St Erth is on the main Penzance-Paddington
railway line so on the face of it has a lot going for it as a major Park
and Ride hub for West Cornwall, especially if it was combined with
better and more integrated rail services with more trains scheduled to
stop at Hayle. |

However the focus of the initiative was put
into doubt when it was stated that the current intention was to retain
the existing Park and Ride Facility at Lelant Salting on the St Ives Branch Line
when surely common sense would dictate that this facility was also moved
to St Erth.
Another problem is that with typical Penwith
Council competence, it emerged that the council failed to secure the
site, which has now been sold to a developer. Presumably this in itself
does not scupper the plans but it will mean the site having to be bought
from the developer, at presumably a substantial premium now that it has
been identified as a prime site.
