Goodbyeee...Senior Officers to be retired

It seems the lucky people of Penwith are to be saying Goodbye shortly to two of it’s most senior Council officers. Hayle Eye could not let them go without an opportunity to thank them for their sterling work on behalf of those they served... and before you do a double take we don’t mean the people of Hayle.

Step forward Roger Harnett  Head of Planning, and Hayle particularly wants to thank Mr Harnett for undertaking not to take any more ‘bounties’ from developers in order that the ‘affordable’ quotient of their plans could be built elsewhere; and guess how long this stance lasted and where the 'affordable houses' got shunted.

Thanks also for allowing several well meaning and cohesive groups from Hayle to waste their time trying talking to the said officers about a sustainable and community use for Loggans Mill. Thanks for listening in the full knowledge that almost as the door shut behind these guys the present development was going  to go through, thereby scuppering those well meant proposals and the future of the Mill in one go. Thanks also for the debacle of 17 Penpol Terrace, where an over development precedent will no doubt be set to the detriment of the majority but to the satisfaction of a minority, in this case a well known councillor, who is the owner of the building.

There has been at least one well documented occasion when it has been said that these officers kept vital information back from councillors were less than rigorous with consultations and generally caused misery to those who would be affected by their decisions- with apparent unflinching arrogance.

Individually, David Hooper must have our thanks for seeming to forget completely that the council taxpayer pays his wages (remember his massive portfolio), and that it is with the people of Penwith as a whole including Hayle that his first duty lies. However, as regular readers will be aware this never seemed to be the case. He has played his part in seeking to deny the rights of individuals in order to cover the tracks of those who should know better. He has attempted and succeeded in some measure to suppress basic human rights such as freedom of association and freedom of expression.

The biggest thanks must go to both these officers however, for the cynical, uncaring not to say suspicious way the ‘ownership’ of Hayle harbour was presided over by them. Years went by as Philip Caruthers’ outfit got away with digging up and selling the beach under their questionable interpretation of Hayle Harbour Act. They presided over the increasing dereliction of Hayle's Harbour  allowing the listed structures to wash into the sea, despite much pleading by many in Hayle and the commissioning of two reports clearly concluding that a Compulsory Purchase Order was justified.

Hayle Harbour is an even bigger eyesore now than ever and despite local councillors naive delight in seeing ING in place and ‘something happening’ no-one knows whether this will eventually translate into a successful planning application - but fingers crossed because, (despite consultants advice), there is no plan B.

No doubt when the shit hits the fan, should ING gets turned down further down the line, these two guys will already be away on their toes carrying their large pensions with them. Thanks and Goodbyeee click for musical tribute
