Road improvements to start this week |

Following deputations from concerned residents work will commence this week making improvements to the road at Chapel Terrace/Foundry Square, next to the Philps Bakery by the Millpond in Hayle. The road contains a parking bay for up to four cars situated on the right hand side of narrow a one- way street up against the Bakery wall, drivers often park leaving a considerable gap between their car and the wall in order to get out of their car. This has meant that passing traffic has had to mount the footway on the left.
Residents had campaigned for the parking bays to simply be removed to ease the congestion and to avoid the dangerous situation of vehicles having to mount the footway. They argued that there was a large car park available less than 100m away on Penpol Road and a smaller car part at the Millpond directly opposite the Bakery. However, following a visit from the County Surveyor from which some residents were controversially excluded, it was decided that such a simple inexpensive solution would not do.
The road will be closed for the best part of the week while contractors narrow the footway and install high kerbs between the remaining footway and the road. It is hoped that this will widen the road enough to let cars pass the parked vehicles while stopping traffic mounting the kerb.
The trouble is that's going to make the footway very narrow, as you can see below, so a lot of people, especially those with pushchairs may find themselves having to walk on the road.
