Councillor to Co-ordinate Traffic Concerns

Following concerns about speeding traffic in general and HGVs in particular Councillor Duncan Cook has stepped forward and offered to co-ordinate a campaign to get something done.

Serious traffic issues in Hayle and especially in relation to Guildford Road and Wheal Alfred Road, have been a matter of concern for some time but were recently highlighted in a letter sent to Hayle Eye. In which an HGV blocked the road, forcing a car to reverse around blind bends.

Mr Cook said "Like most people in Hayle, I am aware of the problem I drive the road myself and have had a few frights.

I now carry a disposable camera in my glove compartment. In the incident described, while it may have been illegal to block the road a photo would be useful especially if it showed any signage and/or registration plates. If enough people affected were willing to do that we could soon build up a convincing dossier to press the case for restrictions. If there is enough interest in this idea I would be happy to co ordinate the collection of evidence."

"I have been thinking further on this subject, in spite of a great deal of talk, items on Radio Cornwall and pictures in the Cornishman nothing has been achieved. This is not just a problem for residents of Guildford road, anyone with local knowledge wanting to get from Helston, Leedstown or Fraddam to Copperhouse end will use that road and consequently put their lives at risk."

"We have a very powerful tool in the internet and Hayle Eye in particular, these are people voluntarily giving their own time and trouble ( and cost ) to provide us with a facility which Penwith District Council should have on it’s own website. Let’s use it, it would not take many people to give the odd hour or half an hour here and there to park up and note road usage, through the Eye we could easily fill in missing days and times and , without too much time or effort from any one individual, we can build up a comprehensive traffic survey."

"We might not succeed but it has to be worth trying, let’s see if, instead of simply complaining we can use the net and this site to achieve a real benefit for Hayle."

"My offer to co ordinate still stands, I will post a topic (traffic survey) on the forum, post to that if you are interested or you can email me at duncancook@yahoo.com"
