Guildford Road Traffic Chaos

Last week travelling in car with my wife from Guildford Road, Hayle to Leedstown, on the top bends of Wheal Alfred Road we met a HGV lorry smack bang on the bend.  Luckily we did not crash but we had to back up around one blind bend.  There was a car behind us too.

My Wife wanted to jump out and tell the Lorry Driver as she was furious.  The size of the Lorry was not suitable for the road and we want to draw it to your attention that this is an accident waiting to happen as this is extremely dangerous.

We rang Mrs Shirley Oliver, our councillor, and said should we have stayed where we were?  We made her aware of the incident.  We then phoned the Police and asked what the position had been if we had stayed in the car and phoned the police for them to see us safely back around the bends?

The Policewoman took advice and informed me that if we had stayed in the car we would have been arrested because we should have been aware it was a narrow road and we should have expected to meet a vehicle coming in the opposite direction, and as we were smaller than the Lorry it was our place to back up and also bearing in mind that lorry drivers can get quite stroppy!

Their only advice was to approach the councillors and ask them to get the Highways to change the signs from blue unsuitable sign that has been placed, to a red one prohibiting lorries to use this road.

It seems very odd that the Highways have acknowledged that the road is unsuitable for HGV use by installing signs to signify same, but at the same time allow the lorries to use it at the expense of safety of the general public.

I thought it would be useful for other passengers travelling this road to be aware that they might have to reverse around blind bends, which to my knowledge is against the guidance of the highway code.
