Loggans Retail Park Plans Approved |

Plans have been approved for developer Cranford to build a retail park with 200 parking spaces on the outskirts of Hayle. The plan for the site includes almost 6,500m2 of retail space at the Loggans Roundabout on the A30 at the eastern entrance to Hayle. The developers have also offered to include a Tourist Information Centre on the site which they have proposed to lease back to the council for five years at a peppercorn rent. What will happen when the five years are up seems to be open to speculation. Hayle town council have made it known that they would rather have a new tourist information centre in Hayle itself, rather than on the outskirts of the town. The possibility of a deal being done whereby further retail development is allowed on the site currently earmarked for the Tourist Information Centre in return for a financial contribution by the developer towards a town centre Tourist Information Office has been suggested as a compromise. The out-of-town development proposal on a greenfield site is not without its critics and goes against Penwith Councils own planning policy which aims to contain retail development within and adjacent to town centres. Some have argued that ugly 'tin shed' warehouse style retail units at the entrance to the town will be unsightly and there is of course the fear that the small traders in Hayle will be the losers. Kerrier council also raised concerns that the development of the site could have an impact as far away as Pool/Camborne and the plans for an increase retail development there.
