Work starts at Loggans Mill

As a number of contributors to Hayle Eye have keen to let us know, work has now begun on the development on the land surrounding Loggans Mill.  Mowlem Construction have begun the scheme to provide 13 social houses for the Guinness Trust within the grounds of the Grade II listed building.

The future of the historic Loggans Mill itself is far from secure. Despite the fact that a bounty was paid by supermarket chain Lidl, to secure the structural integrity of the building as part of their planning consent for a nearby supermarket, no significant works have been done and the building is in a perilous state.

Planning consent for the controversial housing development was approved despite concerns from a number of local groups that the housing scheme which includes multi-story dwellings built close to the existing mill, would prevent the future redevelopment of the mill and undermine its long term future.

The plans which in the opinion of many, gave no consideration to the mill or its future potential were objected to by the town council, Chamber of Commerce, Hayle Forum, Residents' Association and a number of individual residents. Requests that modifications to the layout of the proposed new buildings in order to make plans more sympathetic to the mill and its future potential be made were rejected.

Many people are now speculating that the poor state of repair of the mill building and its new proximity to houses will lead to calls to have it demolished on the grounds of safety.
