There is widespread disquiet in Hayle following Network
Rail's proposal for the closure of the Hayle pedestrian crossing at Hayle
Railway station which as received he backing of Andrew George MP.
Currently
access to/from the Truro bound line from the station car park is by walking over
the tracks at the light controlled pedestrian crossing. It was reported in
the local press a few weeks ago that a tragic incident was only just
avoided when a number of passengers ignored the warning lights, crossed
the tracks and were only moments away from being struck by a high-speed
train..

Local MP Mr George has called for the crossing to be
closed and either the old footbridge to be reinstated or an alternative
route under the nearby road bridge be provided. However this has not met with
universal approval.
People have been quick to point out that the current
crossing, if used properly is not only safe but provides convenient level access
for the elderly, disabled and those with pushchairs, heavy luggage or cycles and
that a footbridge would be a retrograde step. It could also be incompatible with
current disability legislation.

An alternative route to the platform under the nearby
road bridge is also thought by many to be too inconvenient as it would involve a
substantial walk down a quite steep hill, under the bridge and then a climb
again at the other side along narrow roads with no footpath.
Perhaps a better idea would be to make the pedestrian
signals more prominent with 'WALK' and DON'T WALK signs so there can be no
confusion as to whether the signals are supposes to apply to trains or
pedestrians and/or perhaps an automatic pedestrian barrier could be used.
