A30 Junction Plan Revisited

The proposal to construct a junction to allow access to/from the A30 at Tolroy on the western edge of Hayle seems to be back on the agenda. The map below shows one of the possible options. The existing A30 is in green and the black indicates the possible location of new slip roads.

The proposed new junction would allow traffic to/from Helston to get to the A30 from Mellanear Road without the need to go through the town of Hayle. Currently the official position is that all Helston bound traffic is encouraged to use either the Redruth-Helston or the Penzance-Helston Road but in reality many road users go through the town of Hayle. Combined with Holiday traffic his has brought Hayle's roads close to failure in the height of summer in recent years.

While on the face of it it would seem an excellent idea to make the A30 accessible from the Helston Road an element of caution is probably best employed.  Concerns have been raised that he junction could actually increase problems by funnelling traffic from the A30 down Mellanear Road into the town, but perhaps the most worrying aspect of the proposal is that it would encourage more vehicles to use the Helston-Hayle road and if this really desirable.

This is a 'B' road (B3302) , often used by agricultural vehicles and is very narrow and twisty in places. The road also dissects a number of small settlements including Fraddam and Leedstown and is therefore perhaps not best suited to large amounts of traffic especially HGVs.  Unless the construction of the junction was accompanied by some significant road improvements on the B3302 it is feared that it may create more problems than it solves.
