Call for repairs to be made to Hayle Harbour |
|
|
Despite the very evident deterioration in the state of Hayle Beach and Harbour walls Hayle Town Council and Penwith District Council seem very reluctant to use statutory powers and issue a repairs notice which would compel the owners to make good the deterioration. |

Penwith Officer, David Hooper, recently said that while he could not
comment on what had gone on in the past he made assurances that the
council would not sit back and see the harbour fall into the sea. This
leads one to question if Mr Hooper has ever been to Hayle, for if he had
he would be left in no doubt that Hayle Harbour is falling into the sea
and the situation gets progressively worse with each tide. The harbour
walls on Penpol Creek have been in a partially collapsed state for a
good number of years and only last month part of South Quay fell into
the sea.
Could the real reason that Mr Hooper and Penwith Council are so reluctant to act is the fear that if they actually do their statutory duty it may lead them down the road to a compulsory purchase should the owner refuse to co-operate. If Penwith Council had put as much effort into doing what it is obliged to under the law as it had in seeking to avoid its responsibilities the situation in Hayle may have been remedied long ago. |
