Councillor Resigns Over Hayle Swimming Pool |

Prominent and long standing councillor Pete Hampson has apparently resigned from Hayle Town Council following a fracas over Hayle Pool. It is understood that Pete, who as founder and chairman of Friends of Hayle Pool, succeeded in obtaining £5000 from the PirateFM Telethon to provide heating for the pool, resigned after disagreements with some fellow councillors.
This of course begs the question of what will happen to the plans to heat the pool and to the money donated to the project by PirateFM. Will plans go ahead without Mr Hampson to drive it through or will the money have to be returned - it's not that long ago that Hayle Councillors voted to return more than £300,000 of funding for local projects as they were unable to spend it!
Of course there is also the long standing case of Hayle being the poor cousin in West Cornwall. Penzance has its own Lido, the Jubilee Pool, which was recently refurbished at taxpayers expense, St Ives has a brand new leisure centre and swimming pool, thanks to the taxpayers of Penwith, and a new pool and leisure complex is currently under construction in Penzance, conveniently just across the road from the District Council Offices - again public funding has made this possible. |

| In Hayle, on the other hand, there is a small open air pool which was originally constructed with local contributions and voluntary labour which opens for six weeks or so a year. True the District council (begrudgingly) pays for the lifeguard cover over that period, but running repairs and improvements have to be financed by raffles, quiz nights and the like - no ratepayers money here! Why? |
