Manali Mudaliyars

Muddukrishna Mudaliyar

Manali is about 4 Kms to the West of Tiruvotriyur.MudduKrishna Mudaliyar was a dubhash of the EastIndia company.[A dubhash or dvibhashi was one who knew two languages and functioned as an interpreter] .He was a rich man and a patron of fine arts.When had come to Tirivarur he happened to meet the Dikshitars and invited them to Manali. It is said that Arunacala Kavi's RamaNataka keerthanas and Kachiyappa munivar's Vinayaka Purana were staged during his time. The chennakeshwara temple and Chennai Keshava temple were near the seashore and the British found them inconvenient to their military and trading operations and demolished them.The people were agitated and it was Mudaliyar who took steps to rebuild them at their present locations and they continued as the temple trustees.

Chinnaswami Mudaliyar

A few years after the Dikshitar family migrated to Manali Muddukrishna mudaliyar passed away and his eldest son Manali VenkataKrishna Mudaliyar also known as Chinnaiya Mudaliyar succeeded him as the dubhash.He made Ramaswamy Dikshitar as the asthana vidwan and took steps in teaching his sons.It is during his time that the 108-raga tala malika was composed and Ramaswami Dikshitar was honoured with the kanakabhisheka.

Chidambaranatha yogi

Not much is known about the yogin.It is said that he shed his mortal coils in Kashi and his samadhi is in the vicinity of Hanuman ghat.

Venkateshwara Eddappa I [1761 - 1839]
He brought Baluswami Dikshitar to his court.Later Muttuswami Dikshitar came there in search of his brother.He was himself a composer and played the vina.He was noted for his extensive charities.His sons were Kumara Eddappa,Venkateshwara Eddappa II,Muttuswami Eddappa , Kumara MudduPandya and Ramaswami Pandya.

He came to the gaddi in 1839.The Dikshitar brothers continued to remain in his court.HE played the vina and was a patron of scholars and musicians including Vina Subbukutti Iyer,Baluswami Dikshitar's disciples Vina MinakshiSundaram Iyer,Vina Subbia Annavi, vocalists Tirunelveli Vengu Bhagavatar and Madurai Ramaya Bhagavatar and Muttuswami Dikshitar's pupil Tevur Subahmanya Iyer.

Venkateshwara Eddappa II Baluswami Dikshitarwas in his court and Subbarama Dikshitar succeeded him.He was a composer and a musician.

He was named after Muttuswami Dikshitar .Subbarama Dikshitar continued in his patronage.His sons were KumaraEddappa II and Venkateshwara Eddappa.

Upanishad Brahmendra

rAmacandrendra sarasvatI, disciple of vAsudevendra sarasvatI, was popularly called upanishad brahmendra.He belonged to the 18th Century. He was the first author in the advaita tradition to write commentaries on all the 108 upanishads listed in the muktikopanishad. His commentaries are considered to be authoritative, and are quite popular among sannyAsin communities in the south. In the tradition of samanvaya used in the brahmasUtras, he harmonizes the various doctrines found in these texts, and weaves their extensive religious lore into the consistent philosophical framework of Sankaran advaita. upanishad brahmendra lived and taught in Kancipuram in the south. He established his own maTha at Kanci, which continues to this day, under the leadership of illustrious sannyAsins.
