Baluswami Dikshitar[1796- 1859]



Baluswami Dikshitar was born in 1796 AD [prabhava,ashvati] as the youngest
son of Ramaswami Dikshitar.His name was Balakrishna.Endowed with the same
gifts as his two elder brothers ,Baluswami had a special flair for
instruments,vina ,sitar,swarabhat and even the mridangam.He learnt the violin from an English tutor at Manali at the instance of
Manali Chinnaya Mudaliyar for three years.
A visiting musician belonging to the Venkatamakhin's school
sang the raga Takka and challenged the 
Dikshitars to identify this.Baluswami not only identified it but
also sung a piece in it.

He along with a pupil named Hari and Chinnaswami Dikshitar left for Rameswaram
and was under the patronage of the rajah of Ettayapuram.The Rajah built
him a house and even arranged for his second marriage.Baluswami also taught
music to the eldest son of the rajah Kumara Eddappa Maharajah.Baluswami
composed kritis on the Kartikeya shrine at Kankashaila or kazhugumalai.

Baluswami Dikshitar had a daughter.Subbarama Dikshitar was her son and
at  the suggestion of the Rajah Baluswami adopted Subbarama Dikshita
as his son.
