Supreme Ultimate Force

By Ralph Miller

At first, it may sound like the title of a bad Kung Fu movie.  Two men face off.  The talking’s a little outta sync…lips moving with no sound.  “You cannot defeat my Yang style Tai Chi.”  Eyes narrow…silence…the aerial assault begins.  Back flipping action, springing like a tiger, open Palm of Death.  Dropping to the ground, clutching his chest, he gasps, “Your Tai Chi style has defeated me,” “Hurray Tai Chi Master!” shouts one of the spectators.  “What’s Tai Chi?” asks another.

Tai Chi (translated as Supreme Ultimate Force) is a form of exercise consisting of slow, graceful movements.  Although its history is full of stories about extraordinary feats, I’m not suggesting you’ll be able to do back flips, spring like a tiger or stop a man’s heart with the Palm of Death.  In fact, you’re probably more interested in Tai Chi’s other benefits—like increasing strength, improving balance, or lowering blood pressure.  Tai Chi can also be effective for asthma, diabetes and easing arthritis pain.  And because it’s low impact, Tai Chi is specifically designed to be an exercise that can be done by anyone, at any age and in almost any condition.

Just look at the Tai Chi masters on public television—they’re pushing 90, out in the green grassy parks of China, still doing their Tai Chi exercise.  Ask and they smile, saying, “I have the health and vitality of a 20 year old.”  Their secret? The cultivation of Chi—the energy force of the universe that’s considered the center of vitality, stamina and longevity.  After practicing Tai Chi, you may begin to feel the Chi.  And cultivating Chi may improve your well-being.

Of course, Tai Chi does have its roots in ancient Chinese martial arts.  So if you want to learn how to jump six feet in the air and land without a sound…it might be possible.  But the only way you’re going to find out is by signing up for Tai Chi through Gila Community College.  Classes begin January 11th, and Tai Chi is on Monday nights or Saturday mornings.  Take one or both classes for the cost of tuition ($94 for county residents and FREE for those great masters over 55).  Call 425-8481 today and prepare to develop your Supreme Ultimate Force.  Until next time, may all be well.
