South American Notes, The Sphinx, July 1944.
AS MENTIONED in these Notes last month, Chang, the globe trotting Chinese wizard, is at the Avenida Theatre, Buenos Aires, and his season there is now drawing to a close. He has completed 150 performances with only one change of programme, and has been one of the most successful box-office attractions of the present time. On Empire Day (May 24) Chang gave a special performance for the children of British descent and the theatre was packed with nearly 2,000 enthusiastic and applauding kiddies. Chang plans to open up in Monte Video (Uruguay) early in June before returning to this Republic for a tour of the interior. His show is top-notch and has been well received by press and public, and is very fast, presenting between 35 and 40 tricks and illusions in his two-hour performance. South American Notes, The Sphinx, December 1944. AFTER a very successful tour of the interior, Chang the globe-trotting magus returned to Buenos Aires and re-opened his season at the National Theatre on November 9. Although he had already been at the Teatro Avenida for three months earlier in the year, record houses are being registered, and Buenos Aires once more has the pleasure of seeing one of the leading magical shows of the world. Chang carries a company of over twenty people with more than twelve tons of equipment. South American Notes, The Sphinx, January, 1945. CHANG appeared at the National Theatre to crowded houses after his triumphant tour of the interior. By his kindness in providing the writer with a pass for the season, I have been able to witness his spectacular performances some thirty times, and each time come away with the impression that a master magician is at work. Full houses reward this popular illusionist, and his second season in Buenos Aires was a great financial and artistic success. Early in the New Year Chang takes his company for a tour of Brazil. It is worth recording that during his tour of Argentina, the wedding was celebrated of his equally popular manager, Salvador Fernandez and Chang's leading lady. Good wishes. South American Notes, The Sphinx, February, 1945. CHANG, the famous Chinese magician, closed his 1944 season in the Argentine Republic, with a gala programme at the National Theatre, incidentally commemorating his 800th performance attained in this country during his 1936 and present tours. Truly a record of which to be proud, and one that will hardly be surpassed for many years to come. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking Chang publicly for his many attentions and kindnesses, and I shall always treasure the many magic talks we had in his dressing room during the intervals between shows. Chang left for a quick air trip to New York in December to return by boat some time in February when he will voyage to Brazil to carry out extensive contracts which will occupy him and his large company for well over a year. May it not be another seven years before this clever magician and real gentleman comes back to Argentina where he has made for himself so many friends. South American Notes, The Sphinx, July 1945. MUCH to the delight of the magic fans in Buenos Aires, Chang, on return from his flying visit to the States, re-opened for a short season in our latest restaurant-theatre, Babilonia, with immense success. We were able to see the very latest tricks and illusions that this popular magus had brought back from the factories, and were particularly delighted with his cremation illusion, disecto, amputation, guillotine, sympathetic silk routine, duck vanish, and many others. Chang is undecided whether to tour Brazil, or take his large show to England: in the after case transport of his heavy baggage of some fifteen tons may cause him to decide for Brazil, as although the war in Europe is over, shipping facilities from these countries is none too good at present. South American Notes, The Sphinx, January 1946. ALTHOUGH it is not exaclty Christmas wheather as known in more fortunate lands, a reminder of the Festive Season has come through in thr form of a very novel Christmas card from our old friend Chang, who is at present performing to crowded houses at Rio de Janeiro.
