The Second
Edition of English Beyond the Basics
is a much-improved version of the First Edition, and a completely
different book from the Preliminary Edition. Here are major changes:
- The Second
Edition has been expanded, but in such a way that the page numbering
has not changed.
- The title has
been changed slightly to accommodate material added for a more general
audience. Instead of just focusing on the problems of Spanish speakers,
the book now has material for native English speakers whose skills were
predominantly oral. Also, we have had Nigerian, Japanese, Chinese, and
Palestinian students use the book and report that it was very helpful
for them as well. (They just ignored the references to problems originating
in the differences between English and Spanish.)
- All of the
error codes are still on the same pages as before. This means that First
Edition and Second Edition copies can be used in the same
classroom without confusion. (Students acquiring the book for the first
time should buy the Second Edition if possible. However, if they
have First Edition texts purchased earlier or have bought used
copies, the instructor can still use the same grading symbols.)
- The Index
in the Second Edition has been greatly expanded, and is far more
user friendly than that of the last edition.
- More examples
have been added and complex language has been simplified in many areas.
- The Second
Edition also has a sample paper showing the use of grading codes.
