The UNDUE factor: Many years ago I read many very well known books by well established Christian authors, who had many insights regarding the scriptures. I believe I read more books concerning the bible and religion in general, than many ministers studied in bible colleges etc.
While I read the bible too, I found I would often campare what the bible said to what a preacher or teacher said, and base my views on their interpretation of the scriptures. (instead on relying on the Holy Spirit to teach me all things, as He promises)
The bottom line is I had to UNDUE years of study and reading, and learn to study God's word with ONLY the help of the Holy Spirit. Many doctrines and opinions of good Christian men and women, are in fact based upon error and man made denominational influences.
While I may look up a verse in a commentary once in a while, I prefer to use a bible without the footnotes and commentary included in it. Say what you will, nothing beats the pure word of God to feed and grow upon.
Most don't realize how flawed the teachings of many well meaning believers are, try reading up on men like John Calvin. He had a man burned at the stake using green wood, to increase the duration of the victims agony while dying. (over a "doctrinal difference") Martin Luther HATED Jews, and wrote many texts condemning them!
These men were mightly used of God, but I can assure you God did not endorse all of the things they did and taught...
