President's Report

Greetings in November as we batten down the hatches for the winter ahead. The Board met in Toronto on Nov. 6, and what follows are some of the highlights.

You will be receiving an invitation soon from CUMS to join its ranks at a special half price membership rate. We will likewise be offering CUMS members a membership in our organization for $10, an amount that will cover the cost of the CAML Newsletter. I encourage you to join our affiliated society. You will be getting a notice from Rob van der Bliek about amalgamating our Listserv with CUMS over the next month.

There will be elections for new Board members next spring (in advance of the November meeting) for the following positions: Vice- President/President Elect, Secretary and Member at Large.I mention this now to give you plenty of time to plan ahead for CAML next year!

We have come up on the plus side after the 1999 conference at Bishop's, and all accounts are settled. Planning for the Toronto 2000 event (Nov. 1 5) is underway. Thanks to Alison Hall, Debra Begg and Rob van der Bliek for their efforts in this regard. There will be sessions with MLA and IAML USA. Check out the Web site for details and send in your programme ideas.

We will be missing the 2000 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences Federation in Calgary. According to our Constitution, we must have an annual meeting in 2001. The question is, Where? We could go to Laval, or possibly Queen's. The 2002 Congress is in Toronto again, just when we might have preferred to meet in western Canada to keep in touch with our colleagues there. It is a bit of a dilemma. If you have any further thoughts on our conference schedule over the next couple of years, put them on the Listserv for discussion.

Our editor Desmond Maley is always happy to have more suggestions for content in the Newsletter, including personal news of our members. In that connection, I am happy to report that Ann Allen is rejoining our ranks. Ann is now working half time in cataloguing and public service with me at Queen's. The idea of renaming the Newsletter is still under discussion. Any suggestions? You may hear more about this on the Listserv.

The committee to investigate guidelines for a CAML award in librarianship has been formed. If you have suggestions, send them to Tim Maloney, Claude Beaudry or Diane Peters. Stay tuned also for an announcement about our forthcoming Directory of Music Collections in Canada.

That's all for now. And since this is the last Newsletter for the year-Happy holidays! I am off to Australia on Dec. 16 (just thought you would like to know)!
